Clinical and Preventive Cardiology

The Clinical and Preventive Cardiology specialty of the Center for Excellence of Heart and Vascular Care is the first point of contact for the early detection and management of patients at-risk or with common heart problems like heart attack, valve disease, and heart failure. This sub-speciality is focused on lowering patients’ risk for developing heart disease and having a first heart attack or stroke while also preventing further issues in people who already have cardiovascular disease.

Our cardiologists work with specialized tests and procedures that provide an accurate diagnosis, helping them create informed treatment plans and ensuring the best care possible for each patient, both outpatient and inpatient alike. This includes lifestyle adjustments, medication, such as medications to lower cholesterol or blood pressure, and clinical procedures. They also closely collaborate with our specialist cardiovascular surgeons, should surgery be the best option for treatment.

FAQ

Can exercise really make your heart stronger?

Exercise reduces blood pressure and increases the good cholesterol (HDL) in the body. It improves the number of blood vessels in the heart and in the rest of the body. So, exercise makes it less likely that you will have a heart attack and if you do have a heart attack, it's likely that it will be less severe. In addition, exercise is a very important component of any weight-loss program.

Can stress cause heart disease?

Stress can increase the risk of heart disease, although we still do not know how this happens. A sudden physical or emotional stress can certainly lead to an episode of angina or even a heart attack.

What can I do to reduce my risk of developing heart disease?

There are both non-modifiable (things you can’t change) and modifiable risks (things you can change) associated with heart disease.
Non-modifiable risks of heart disease

  • Family history
  • Age

Modifiable risks of heart disease

  • Smoking
  • Eating healthy
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Regular exercise
  • Healthy blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol
