An allergy is the reaction of the immune system to a foreign substance which may not be typically harmful to your body. The foreign substance that has entered is known as allergen and the reaction is termed as allergy.

Allergy can trigger symptoms in nose, lungs, throat, eyes, skin, ear, sinus or stomach lining. Different types of allergies show different symptoms. Common symptoms of allergy include:

  • Itchy eyes, skin and/or nose
  • Red, watery eyes
  • Dry, red, cracked skin
  • Skin rashes 
  • Raised skin
  • Swelling in eyes, face, lips
  • Stomach pain
  • Feeling sick
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Sneezing
  • Runny, stuffy or blocked nose

  • Edema
  • Severe allergic reactions can also occur which require immediate medical attention. It is termed as anaphylaxis, the symptoms of which include:
    • Loss of consciousness
    • A drop in blood pressure
    • Severe shortness of breath
    • Chest tightness
    • Lightheadedness 
    • Weak pulse
    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Blue skin or lips
    • Pale color on face and body
    • Wheezing
    • Stomach cramping
    • Swelling of throat and mouth

Diagnosis of allergies include:

    • Review of signs and symptoms
    • Physical exam
    • Skin test
    • Blood test

Allergies can be controlled and prevented from reoccurring by the following measures:

  • Avoid allergens 
  • Avoid known triggers
  • Maintain a diary to keep track of your food intake, travel and occurring symptoms – this can help to find the cause and avoid it
  • Keep your home dry, clean and well ventilated

Common treatment measures for allergies include:

  • Avoiding allergy triggers
  • Medications such as antihistamines, anti inflammatory drugs, decongestants, steroid drugs may be given depending on the type of allergy and the symptoms exhibited
  • Saline sinus rinse to clear the airways by removing the allergens
  • Lotions, creams and ice packs can be used for treating allergies on skin
  • Allergen Immunotherapy
  • Emergency epinephrine for severe allergic reactions
