Hypertension, also termed as high blood pressure or elevated blood pressure occurs due to long term force of blood against artery walls. There will be blood pressure variations throughout a day based on your activities. 

Two types of hypertension are:

  • Primary hypertension: It develops gradually over years and has no identifiable cause.
  • Secondary hypertension: It appears suddenly; has higher blood pressure than primary hypertension and is caused by an underlying condition.



Possible causes of secondary hypertension are:

  • Sleep apnea
  • Adrenal gland tumours

  • Certain medications
  • Congenital conditions

Common symptoms of hypertension includes:

Diagnosis of hypertension includes:

  • Review of signs and symptoms
  • Medical history
  • Physical examination
  • To check for more signs of heart disease, your doctor may also recommend the following procedures:
    • Urine test or urinalysis
    • Blood test
    • Cholesterol screening
    • Ultrasound
    • Electrocardiogram
    • Echocardiogram

Chances of primary hypertension can be reduced by the following measures:

  • Intake of healthy diet
  • Regular exercise
  • Maintain healthy weight
  • Control blood sugar, cholesterol and pressure levels
  • Manage stress
  • Avoid smoking, caffeine and alcohol.
  • Home remedies or lifestyle changes in the treatment of hypertension includes:
    • Heart healthy diet
    • Regular physical activity
    • Maintain healthy weight
    • Limit amount of alcohol
    • Managing stress
  • Medications are used in the treatment including beta blockers, diuretics or alpha blockers.
  • Secondary hypertension can be reduced by treating the underlying conditions.
