Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HOLEP)
Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) is a type of minimally-invasive laser surgery used to treat obstruction (blockage) of urine flow because of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. For a prostate of a certain size, HOLEP or Holmium laser prostatectomy is a modern alternative to TURP (Trans Urethral Resection of Prostate), the traditional operation for the prostate.
How and why is it done?
Holmium laser prostate surgery is a minimally invasive treatment for an enlarged prostate (BPH). The procedure uses a scope per urethra with a high-powered laser to carefully core out and remove the excess prostate tissue that is causing the obstruction of the urethra.
HoLEP is a promising alternative for the surgical treatment of BPH which allows complete removal of intact lobes of the prostate. Obstruction is relieved immediately with superior haemostasis, no risk of TUR syndrome (a complication that can be caused due to the trans urethral reception of the prostate), and a minimal hospital stay.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does HOLEP remove the entire prostate?
HOLEP removes the entire portion of the prostate that can block urine flow. It can be an option to treat a severely enlarged prostate. The treatment provides a lasting solution for an enlarged prostate — a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
How painful is HOLEP surgery?
The HOLEP procedure is consistently superior compared to other treatments for benign prostate enlargement. HoLEP can treat any size of the prostate gland and is so effective that retreatment rates are less than two percent. It leads to fast symptom relief with limited swelling and minimal to no pain when voiding.
Is HOLEP a major surgery?
HOLEP (Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate) is a minimally invasive surgical treatment for men with any degree of prostate enlargement who have urinary symptoms, and men who are suffering from retention of urine repeated urine infections, or bleeding due to their enlarged prostate.
